West's diary and letters (1853-1855) concerning his overland journey from Defiance, Ohio (April 10, 1853) to Foster's Ranch, Oregon via the Oregon Trail and Barlow Road; discusses frontier life and school teaching in Umpqua County, Oregon; West returned to Ohio to get his family; he died of cholera on the return voyage to Oregon; additional comments contributed by Reginald R. Stuart and Grace D. Stuart.

Calvin Brookings West settled in Defiance, Ohio (1843) with his wife, Elizabeth Ludlow Hudson West. His many letters to relatives describe family life in Ohio (1844-1852). In 1853 West travelled alone to Oregon. He kept a journal of his experiences and sent regular letters to family members about life on trail and in Umpqua River Valley, Oregon (1853). When West's wife became ill, he returned to Ohio (1854). After her recovery, they took ship for Oregon, but West died of cholera before they reac...
